Servant Leadership: The No-Thunder Approach to Quietly Influencing Others

What you want done, gets done when you put your people first. They’ll reward the sacrifice you make for them by making your reality, theirs. Start with a vision. Execute with a purpose. Yield the right of way.

Relinquish your need for power to control your people and you’ll win the battle for influence. Former U.S. President, Dwight D. Eisenhower observed, “Leadership is the art of getting someone else to do something you want done because he wants to do it.”

Ignite great potential in others by deliberately and strategically changing your mission’s aim and its execution to be about them, not you. You’ll exponentially achieve much more through multiplication, than by going solo. One seed falls to the ground, dies, and its capitulation results in production of fruit and more seeds. It is a continuous cycle of regeneration. So it is also to increase influence.

Historically, great leaders are first, humble servants. Get things done through others, put people over popularity, and you’ll unleash a force that changes a world. Consider one who did. Of all the jobs he could have chosen, he opted to be a lowly carpenter. Of all the paths he could have traveled, he purposed to walk the road to humility. They wanted him to be a king. He chose to be a servant.

Labeled as the “Man of Sorrows” throughout his personal and professional life, he was well-acquainted with routine disappointments, misunderstandings and frustrations. A humble resident of ancient Nazareth, whose life radiated others-oriented sacrifice, he enigmatically became a life-changing influence. He was the epitome of what “One-Minute Manager®” author, Ken Blanchard calls a “Servant Leader” because his mission transformed from the inside; the thoughts and actions of those around him. His endeavors were never self-serving.

A servant leader masters the skill of wood crafting. Whether in human resource development or in forming a work of art, there’s a mind-meld, an oneness that must occur between the crafter and the entity being formed. Unity of vision, not force transforms something out of nothing; from useless, to useful.

Brute force to timber creates firewood to be discarded. Brute force to people you want to influence destroys their spirit and neutralizes their capability to become persons of passion and purpose. Carve wood or shape others; both need development time, patience and total immersion into the undertaking.

Seek balance to offset the tyranny of the urgency. Tom Buehner, Business Strategist for R.L. Stevens & Associates Inc., an international career marketing organization headquartered in Waltham, Massachusetts, develops people, organizational infrastructures, and in his spare time, as a highly-skilled woodworker, custom furniture.

He believes whether building the next effective leader, or constructing awesome wood creations, the principle of balance is the same. “You can’t use an axe

to carve a sculpture, nor can you turn a tree trunk into a table, in a hurry. If you do, you’ll overlook the wood’s inherent elegance. Likewise, uncovering a person’s potential involves time,” Buehner instructs.

Maximum influence ensues smoothly and naturally when there’s time to peel layers that hide the inner core. “The trunk of a tree, the raw material of any wood craft, has many rings. Some of these layers are rigid, some are soft. To reveal its best qualities, you must take time to really study what you have before you and envision the end-product. The work of transforming the wood needs to be done non-violently and patiently to lower the impact of the change and to receive from it in exchange, malleability. It’s the same canon to productively win over and empower your people.” Buehner says.

People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care. Influence others to accept change by removing self-interest. Make sure what’s shared with them is edifying and beneficial. Create an unhurried environment that allows them to own their success through systematic positive affirmation.

When asked what role communications play in effectively influencing others, Buehner states from his Carmel, Indiana office, “It is less important to get your point out than it is to get your point across.” The intent of your message must equal the impact it had on them. Make sure your intent is clearly understood. Ask:

• “What did you hear me say?”

• “How do you see me helping you accomplish this?”

“Communication breaks down between leaders and those they influence when the intent is unrecognizable,” Buehner adds. “If you seek first to understand, and be a role model for others in your service to them, your message becomes a powerful leadership development tool. Duplicate yourself in your people by earning their trust, respect and accord. They’ll become more pliable and less resistant to change.”

Want a better way to permanently influence others? Remember:

• To shape you must seed

• To serve you must sacrifice

• To teach you must be taught

• To influence you must immerse

• To produce you must cultivate patience

People ascend to become what you want them to be if you allow them the opportunity to be who they are. Leadership requires the courage to let go of certainties. See inside yourself and others to visualize the end-product without prejudice or presumption.

Stop striving to be on top. You won’t lose your identity by yielding; you’ll find it — finally.

Permission to Play

At what age does the benefit of play cease? Child development experts agree that play is very important in the learning and emotional development of all children. But do we ever grow out of a need for play? I answer with an emphatic no. All the benefits of play continue into adulthood. Would you like to enjoy the following benefits daily?

- Experience fun and joy

- Further develop skills such as reading, problem solving, and strength & flexibility

- Work through emotions and develop values and ethics

- Improve your feelings of self-worth

- Better understanding of the world around you

- Develop social skills and deeper relationships

That’s just a short list of what experts say children gain when they play. Humanity has robed itself of humanity when play is removed from our lives. As we age we continue to learn and grow. In some ways we are always children. Exploration and discovery should not end when we become adults. If anything, play should become more exciting and expansive.

Let me apply this to the work world. If you take a little time to play with your tools and explore what

they can do, you will find yourself becoming more efficient and skilled with them. The quality of your work will increase because you’ve been honoring recess and allowing your sub-conscious mind to get involved in the problem solving. Your job will continue to excite you because you will always be finding something new.

In addition, play is a stress relief. If you keep a bow constantly strung up, it will lose it’s spring and cease to function. If you continue to tighten the stings on an instrument, they will eventually break and there will be no more music. Playing allows you to loosen the strings and maintain your flexibility. Without play, we can become so focused on one thing that we sacrifice all other possibilities. Concentrate too hard on a single tree trunk long enough and not only will you miss the forest, you’ll miss the approaching forest fire!

Take a little time and have some fun today. It will not matter what you accomplish in life, if in the end you never enjoyed it.

Creativity Defined So You Can Use It

So just what is creativity?

Here’s my definition:

“Creativity is simply looking at something that has always been there and seeing something that has never been seen before”

That’s really all there is to it.

But I’m not creative…….

I hear people tell me all the time that they cannot do something because they are not creative. I respond by asking them if they ever worry. Then they answer that of course they worry.

My point is that if you worry then you are creative. Because what is worrying? All worrying is, is going into the future to some fearful or unwanted event, feeling the emotions as if it has really happened, and then dragging those emotions back into the present time.

Now if that is not creative, I don’t know what is.

Using your creativity in the best way

The task then becomes to stop using your creativity in a way that harms you and begin to use your

creativity in a way that supports you.

Creativity questions

Get in mind your area of expertise.

Here are two of the questions I frequently use to spark my creativity:

1. In how many ways can I make what I am currently doing even better?

2. In how many ways can I look at something I do all the time and do it in ways that have never been done before?

Remember the definition of creativity with which we started this article:

“Creativity is simply looking at something that has always been there and seeing something that has never been seen before.”

A Powerful Leadership Tool: Taking Delight In The People You Lead

Leadership entails getting results, and getting results entails human relationships. To an important degree, the more closely the people and the leader bond, the more results will accrue.

However, most leaders and the people they lead look at those relationships as a one way street: charismatic leaders being commonly defined by sentiments bestowed on them from the people. But great leadership is really a two-way street, also involving sentiments going from the leader to the people.

We never know how good we are as leaders until we are delighting in the people we lead and, through that delight, leading them to get continually better results while they become continually better as leaders and as people.

For instance, I recently received an email from my old company commander inviting me to a reunion. He wrote, “I was the luckiest rifle company commander in the Marine Corps when I was surrounded by the best group of infantry officer lieutenants I ever knew. And they were all in our company!”

I had not heard from him in many decades, but I remember not so much what I did but what he did. He went against the grain of the leadership style and conduct of some officers I knew — officers who got the job done by being pretty much focused on themselves and their careers.

My ex-company commander, however, got the job done by being inspired by the troops, not by himself.

Out in civilian life, I’ve seen other leaders take a similar delight in and be inspired by the people they lead, and I have come to realize that this penchant is really a powerful, though rarely used, leadership tool.

To use the tool properly, three things must be kept in mind.

1. Delight must happen within the context of high results-expectations. In your delight, don’t be hampered by the bigotry of low expectations. My company commander was known for having his men undergo the most difficult training and take on the toughest assignments. He delighted in his troops not just for what they wanted to do but what he challenged them to do. After all, leadership is not about having people do what they want to do. If they did want they wanted, you wouldn’t be needed as a leader. Leadership is about having people do what they may not want to do and be committed to doing it.

2. Delight must be truthful.

Don’t try to manipulate people through your delight. When the circumstances called for it, my company commander was brutally honest with us. If we weren’t measuring up to his high standards, we’d know about it from him in forceful and vivid ways. His honesty was a leadership lesson: have the troops see themselves as they should be seen, not as they want to be seen. Sure, he riled us up many times. But because his honesty helped the troops become better Marines, it was eventually accepted and even welcomed.

3. Delight must be practical. My company commander was always linking the delight he found in the troops with lessons learned in accomplishing missions and best practices that came from the lessons. His delight wasn’t meant to have people feel good about themselves but to motivate them to take actions to be continually better. In that striving to be better and, getting better in the striving, we bonded. Clearly, going where we had to go and doing what we had to do, we were often miserable; but through it all, there was, in the back of my mind at least, the compulsion not to let him down — and not to let each other down.

You may not have thought about delight as a leadership tool, but it is one of the most effective because it goes right to the heart of getting results through the cementing of right relationships. Keep these three factors in mind when expressing your delight, and your leadership will be blessed daily with new opportunities.

Can Money Buy You Happiness?

Well, doesn’t that depend on what’s causing you to be unhappy, in the first place?

If you’ve just lost a loved one, no amount of money will make you happy, only time and your own attitude will eventually lessen the pain and hopefully bring some joy back into yourlife.

However, if a stack of unpaid bills is facing you each day, wouldn’t enough money to pay them, not make you happy? If you are someone you love, needs expensive medical care and you can’t afford it, would money not be the happy answer?

So, before we adopt some of these truisms about money, we should see how they apply to the reality of the situation.Money is not a “magic bullet”, but then in life, what is?But the effectiveness of money, like most of the things we use and have come to rely on in our world, it is all relative.

Being without money doesn’t automatically make someone unhappy, but

neither does having money guarantee happiness.Rich people are happy because they don’t have to be worried and unhappy about not being able to pay bills, make purchases they want, travel, entertain and so on.

But if they became ill and money could not help, they would be just as unhappy and miserable as the poor person who cannot afford the treatment in the first place.

Money cannot buy anyone more time, but it can give you more freedom to choose how you use your time.

A very happy by-product, choice!

“Freedom of choice”, if there was ever a magical phrase, that one is it!That is the happiness that money buys!

Lack of money or too little money, limits the choices we canmake in and about our lives.

5 Ways To Stress Relief

Stress has been called ‘the plague of our time’. More than ever before stress relief seems to be in great demand and especially for people in stressful jobs or careers. It would be more appropriate to ask which jobs or careers are not stress related and you would probably be able to count the number on one hand. As a self help tool for handling stressful situations in your everyday life, I’ll give you 5 simple methods for instantly relieving stress that has worked great for me. I really hope these methods can be useful for you as well.

Remove stress with relaxation

If you are stressed, sit down at the most comfortable place you can find, close your eyes and say to your self slowly:

“I am calm. Absolutely calm. I feel relaxed. My hands are heavy. I’m calm and relaxed. My arms are heavy and relaxed. My arms and my legs are relaxed and heavy. My torso is relaxed, calm and feels heavy. My shoulders and neck are heavy and relaxed. My entire body is calm, relaxed and heavy. I feel great, relaxed and calm. I feel warmth spreading from my stomach to all parts of my body. My entire body is calm, relaxed, heavy and warm. I feel good and I’m totally relieved from stress. “

Continue having this feeling of being totally relaxed and stress less for as long as you can or want. When you decide to finish this down-stressing session, take a deep breath and stretch out your arms in a short and energetic movement. How do you feel now? Practice this exercise every time you feel stressed.

Sit down and look at the Sea

If you are stressed and need to relax go to the harbor, the nearest beach or any place close to the sea, or a lake if you live in the inland. Just sit there and feel it, smell it, hear it. Don’t think so much, just sense. Do you feel relaxed? Keep on until you feel the stress has left you.

Take

a Walk

If you are stressed leave your home or office and take a thirty minute walk. Just walk don’t talk to anybody. Try to relax while you walk. Instead of thinking or focusing on your current problems, try to sense your environments like smell, sound impressions and what you see as well as your inner feelings; heart beat, your feet touching the ground and the movements of your arms. Do you feel relaxed now? After half an hour your stressful feelings should have disappeared.

Listen to Music

If you are stressed sit or lie down, walk or do whatever you want, while you are listening to music. Don’t listen to heavy rock and similar music, this might invoke even more stress. Relaxing with a Nat King Cole ballad or two, some slow pace smooth Jazz, the Adagietto movement of Gustav Mahlers 5th symphony or Mozart’s Grand Partita for wind instruments are all great. Do you feel more relaxed? Is your stressfulness leaving you? It should.

Laugh, laugh and laugh

If you are stressed, call or visit friends that you have had much fun with. Talk with them about funny things you have done in the past and as they the youngsters say, “Get your laugh on”. Do all you can to provoke good and healthy laughter as it is very relaxing and dissolves the away the stress. Read a joke magazine, watch a comedy DVD or video or listen to a funny audio. If you have kids around you, play a crazy and childish game with them, they love it and everybody will relax. The point is, laugh and your stress will disappear and you’ll feel relaxed.

The Power of Desire- Part 2

Let’s continue where we left off in Part 1…

We have stated that it was in the power of man to Create Desire; not only to be its master when created, but also to actually create it by bringing it into being. And the statement is absolutely true, and is verified and proven by the most recent experiments and discoveries of modern psychology. Instead of man being a creature of Desire and this indeed he is in many cases, he may become Master of Desire and even a Creator of it. By knowledge and Will he may reverse the ordinary order of things and, displacing the intruder from the throne, he may seat himself there in his rightful place, and then bid the late occupant do his will and obey his bidding. But the best way for the new occupant of the throne to bring about a reorganized court is to dismiss the old objectionable creatures of his mind and create new ones in their places. And here is how it may be done: In the first place, one must think carefully over the tasks that he wishes to accomplish, then, using his judgment carefully, judicially and impartially, impersonally so far as is possible – he must take mental stock of himself and see in what points he is deficient, so far as the successful accomplishment of the task is concerned. Then let him analyze the task before him, in detail, separating the matter into as many clear defined divisions as possible, so that he may be able to see the Thing as It Is, in detail as well as in its entirety. Then let him take a similar inventory of the things, which seem necessary of the accomplishment of the task, not the details that will arise only as the work progresses, day by day, but the general things, which must be done in order that the task is brought to a successful conclusion. Then having taken stock of the task, the nature of the undertaking, and one’s own qualifications and shortcomings – then Begin to Create Desire, according to the following plan: The first step in the Creation of Desire is that of the forming of a clear, vital Mental Image of the qualities, things and details of the undertaking, as well as of the Completed Whole. By a Mental Image we mean a clear-cut, distinct mental picture in the Imagination of the things just names. Now, do not turn away with an impatient motion at the mention of the word Imagination. That is another word that you have only a mistaken idea of. Imagination means far more than the mere idle, fanciful use of that part of the mind that is believed by people to be “all there is to it.

It isn’t all, by a long way. In fact, the fanciful part may be said to be merely a shadow of the real Imaginative effort. Imagination is a real thing, it is a faculty of the mind by which it creates a matrix, mold, or pattern of things, which the trained Will and Desire afterward, materializes into objective reality. There has been nothing created by the hands and mind of man which did not have its first origin in the Imagination of some one. Imagination is the first step in Creation, whether of worlds or trifles. The mental pattern must always precede the material form. And so it is in the Creation of Desire. Before you can Create a

Desire you must have a clear Mental Image of what you need to Desire.

You will find that this task of creating a Mental Image is a little harder than you had expected at the start. You will find it hard to form even a faint mental picture of that which you need. But be not discouraged, and persevere, for in this, as everything else. Practice makes perfect. Each time you try to form the Mental Image it will appear a little clearer and more distinct, and the details will come into a little more prominence. Do not tire yourself at first, but lay aside the task until later in the day, or tomorrow. But practice and persevere and you need, just as clearly as a memory picture of something you have already seen. We shall have more to say on this subject of Mental Imagery and Imagination in subsequent lessons. Then, after having acquired the clear Mental Image of the things you wish to Desire, and thus attain, cultivate the focusing of the Attention upon these things. The word attention is derived from the Latin word “Attendere,” meaning “to stretch forth,” the original idea being that in Attention the mind was “stretched forth,” or “extended” toward the object of attention, and this is the correct idea for that is the way the mind operates in the matter. Keep the ideas before your attention as much as possible, so that the mind may take a firm grasp upon them, and make them a part of itself – by doing this you firmly impress the ideas upon the wax tablet of the mind.

Thus having fixed the idea clearly in your mind, by means of the Imagination and Attention, until as we have said, it becomes a fixture there, begin to cultivate an ardent DESIRE, LONGING, CRAVING DEMAND for the materialization of the things. Demand that you grow the qualities necessary for the task – demand that your mental pictures materialize, Demand that the details be manifested as well as the Whole, making allowance for the “something better” which will surely arise to take the place of the original details, as you proceed, the Inner Consciousness will attend to these things for you.

Then Desire firmly, confident, and earnestly. Be not halfhearted in your demands and desires, claim and demand the WHOLE THING, and feel confident that it will work out into material objectivity and reality. Think of it, dream of it, and always LONG for it. You must learn to want it the worst way; learn to “want” it hard enough. “You can attain and obtain many things by “wanting them hard enough” The trouble is with most of us that we do not want things hard enough, we mistake vague cravings and wished for earnest, longing, demanding Desire and Want. Get to Desire and Demand the Thing just as you demand and Desire your daily meals. That is “wanting it the worst way.” This is merely a hint. Surely you can supply the rest, if you are in earnest, and want it hard enough.

Creativity: Dare to Dream

Have you ever thought of this? When you were young and at school the teachers always reprimanded the dreamers – “You live on another planet”, “You’ve got your head full of silly notions!” and the like.

Then we are in the playground. The boys say, “I’m gonna jump over that garbage can” and the other boys say, “Nah, you’re not good enough, you can’t do that.”

You back up and run your hardest at the garbage can and try to ignore the taunts of your disbelieving friends – you leap – and on passing over the bin, catch your foot and crash down”.

You can still hear the laughing and to this day blush in embarrassment when you think about it. Perhaps your teachers were right – dreams are silly. Perhaps the other kids were right – you’re not good enough.

Do you relate to this? Many of us do. If something like this has happened to you in the past you will know the disbelief and laughter of your childhood peers can cut a very deep wound. But you know there is a wound that is far worse than that? It is the wounding of our intestinal fortitude and the weakening of our lifetime resolve that occurs when we picked ourselves up of the school yard, hung our head, walked away along and thought, “They must be right, – I – can’t – do – it”. Have you said that about yourself and your business? The difference between those who achieve extraordinary goals and

those who don’t, is always in their thinking.

The incredibly fun, magical and simple thing about multi level marketing is this. If you can learn to reprogram your childhood self- limiting beliefs – you can do anything…earn an extra $500 per month right up to earning large royalty checks that you’re your whole destiny in life!

Are you ready to reprogram your thinking? Create a vision for yourself – and play with possibility thinking? Create an environment around yourself where you dwell on achievements rather than failures. See yourself leaping over the garbage can – over and above every conceivable obstacle. Any worthwhile achievement must start in the brain. An old prophet once said, “As a man thinks, so he is”. If you aim at nothing, you are sure to hit it!

I have heard it said that Thomas Edison created 800 light globes before he made one that worked! If he didn’t believe he could do what seemed impossible, I am quite sure he would have stopped after the second or third attempt! Is your thinking stopping you achieving your dreams?

The 3 Ps: Perfectionism, Procrastination, and Paralysis

Do you set your standards high, but always feel like you’ve failed? Learn about the 3 “P’s” and end the vicious cycle that keeps you stuck and ineffective.

The Vicious Cycle

Perfectionism, procrastination, and paralysis – one often leads to the next, in a vicious cycle, especially on large, long-term projects with no clear deadlines. Let’s look at each part of this cycle, and explore some concrete steps that you can take to disrupt the cycle.

Perfectionism

Perfectionism can be defined as striving towards impossibly high goals. Perfectionists are caught in a trap – they can never be good enough. They engage in rigid, black or white thinking about their own performance – if it isn’t perfect, it’s horrible.

Ironically, perfectionists often achieve a product that is far less than perfect. At times, their performance is mediocre. In contrast, those who aim at more realistic goals can outperform the perfectionists. How can this be? The procrastination and paralysis that results from overly high standards causes the perfectionist to wait until it’s too late, then rush to do something; anything. The more relaxed realist, in the meantime, is able to put an effort in earlier, over a more prolonged period of time, with more chance to let time and subsequent changes or editing improve the final product.

Procrastination

When you believe that your next project should set the world on fire, you are setting yourself up for failure. At some level you know that this level of achievement is unlikely. You lose your energy and excitement for your project.

On a football field, when the coach yells at the team that they are a bunch of @$#% for playing so poorly, the players may play better. That is because they are enraged at being humiliated and they can use the rage to batter their opponents. This doesn’t not work in other spheres! Criticism, whether from your boss or your own inner critical audience slows you down, and interferes with your thinking process.

It is so easy to put off the next step of your project when thinking about it makes you experience unpleasant feelings. So you procrastinate. “I’ll get started tomorrow, and work twice as hard.” But it’s hard for you to ignore the fact that you are not living up to your own high expectations for yourself. “I’m lazy.” “ I have no will power.”

As time goes on, you start to grind to a halt. That leads to the third “P.”

Paralysis

You do absolutely nothing on the

very project that is most important to you. This is devastating for your self-esteem, and very discouraging. It’s hard to plan your next project when you failed to complete your last one.

How to Avoid the 3 “P’s”

There are steps that you can take to avoid falling into the vicious cycle of the 3 ”P’s.

· Become aware of the perfectionistic audience voices in your head (no, you’re not crazy.) You can’t learn to ignore them if you don’t know that they’re talking to you.

· Learn how to answer them back (don’t do it out loud or people will think you’re crazy.) An example would be, “OK it’s not my best work but at least I’m finishing it.”

· Look for role models who are satisfied with “good enough.” Note how they get things done and are not looked down on by others.

· Set up realistic goals. One way to tell if a goal is realistic is if you can actually do it. For example, “Read two articles and write for 15 minutes before 5:00 tonight” is a realistic goal. “Read two articles and write for 6 hours and write 10 pages before 5:00 tonight” is not a realistic goal.

· If you have reached the third “P,” drastic steps are needed. Talk to a trusted friend, find a “project buddy,” or seek coaching. Do Not Give Up – it is very possible to get yourself out of the paralyzed state and back to productivity with just a little help.

A Final “P.” Or Maybe Two.

Productivity

Start with baby steps. Do a little every day. As you observe your own productivity, however small it may be, you will start to feel better about yourself. You were capable all along – it’s just that your unrealistic expectations stopped you from functioning optimally. Eventually your productivity will start to look like Progress. And that’s the last “P” for today.

Getting Help For Your Fear, Bipolar, And Anxiety Problems

It is not easy to deal with your fears, bipolar, or anxiety problems. The first step is that you should talk to a professional who can get you started in the right path of getting better. Getting help from a counselor or other professional is very important and can provide you much help and insights in dealing with your current problem. In addition, here are some techniques a person can use to help manage their fears, bipolar, and anxieties.

Learn to take it one day at a time. Instead of worrying about how you will get through the rest of the week or coming month, try to focus on today. Each day can provide us with different opportunities to learn new things and that includes learning how to deal with your problems. Focus on the present and stop trying to predict what may happen next week. Next week will take care of itself.

A good way to manage your fear is to challenge your negative thinking with positive statements and realistic thinking. When encountering thoughts that make your fearful or anxious, challenge those thoughts by asking yourself questions that will maintain objectivity and common sense.

Sometimes, we may be nervous doing a certain task that may be scary. When this happens, visualize yourself doing the task in your mind. For instance, you and your team have to play in the championship hockey game in front of a large group of people in the next few days. Before

the big day comes, imagine yourself playing the game in your mind. Imagine that your playing in front of a large audience. By playing the game in your mind, you will be better prepared to perform for real when the time comes. Self Visualization is a great way to reduce the fear and stress of a coming situation.

Remember that there is one power that is stronger than your fears and that is the power of God. A person does not have to be religious to use the power of God. When the going gets tough, talk to God about your problems as if you were talking to a friend. Review the Bible and pray hard. Be persistent and be open in the avenues that God may provide to you in solving your problem. It is not always easy, however God is in control and he will help you if you ask him.
