The Seven Solutions to Practical Stress Management That Work

“Your direct perception of higher truth sets you free” is what Tom Russell points out with his 7 Solutions to Practical Stress Management. Discovering how to make use of daily life experiences to shake awake the natural wisdom that lies within, will help an individual to break free from the daily stress of life.

Stress is astonishingly unrelenting, sometimes it’s even seductive –one gets used to the feeling of being tense and tight. Although positive thinking have its “piece of say”, unless it’s supported by practical wisdom, it will be inclined to get overpowered and weaken away. Here are the 7 Solutions to Practical Stress Management for a better and proven stress handling approach:

“Control your Reaction with these 7simple words”

This first step of the 7 Solutions to Practical Stress Management involves remaining watchful when people attempt to put you down with anxious attitudes and comments. Replying with seven simple words “I have nothing to say to that” cuts off any infectious effect of a stressful assault.

These simple words obstructs the tendency of accepting and imitating depressing words, and not falling down to the point of nervous remarks, but instead let’s you remain higher than it. Remember, negative people will want you to be involved in their defeat, saying simply “I have nothing to say to that” stops them from luring you in to be their victims –“a silent refusal to enter the battlefield is a perfect reply”.

“Let go of painful grudges by living in the present moment”

Hate is similar to poison that eats one up inside and kills any possibility

of renewal. One must give others the equal chance to change or it’s like shutting one’s own development. The clandestine to stress-free success is realizing one’s own newness many times every day.

“Observe negative thoughts with the aim of understanding them, instead of trying to suppress them”

Self-observation plays a major role in stress-free living; don’t claim stressful feelings and thoughts, instead understand them.

“Pause often and enjoy a deep breath”

Breathing away the tension helps remove habitual resentful and anxious attitudes, and restores a clear mind to reveal what’s good for you.

“Realize you have far better things to think about”

Negative images in the mind often claim one’s energy; snapping out of these spells can lessen stress and provide a new vitality.

“Stay clear of negative zones of influence”

Widespread negative influences are always on the loose; staying clear of these stressful zones and living in peace with the heart will create a better stress-free environment for you.

“Refuse to make stressful or angry comments”

This last step in the 7 Solutions to Practical Stress Management involves keeping in mind that stress starts small, and if indulged in becomes bigger and bigger –stop it at its infancy. The best place to get rid of stress is “before it leaves the mouth”.

These 7 Solutions to Practical Stress Management is a very good way to follow to help melt stress in one’s life. Being aware of one’s innate ability for wisdom and doing things according to this rightful wisdom will ensure happiness and eliminate stress.

Would Socrates Be A Celebrity Today?

Last week, as I was standing in the checkout line of my local grocery store, I found myself staring at the dozen or so magazines on display. As I gazed upon the various photos and headlines praising or trashing the celebrity du jour, I got to thinking.

What kind of celebrity would Socrates be if he were alive today? How would we treat him?

In what way would he ask his questions in the 21st century? He never wrote much of anything–we know his ideas mostly through the work of his student, Plato. Would he give speeches? Would he have televised debates? Would he have his own talk show?

If so, who would be his guests?

Socrates was famous in his day. He was loved and admired for his ideas and his relentless questioning, and he was despised for the same things. Like all celebrities, he had his fans and he had his detractors.

Socrates himself said, “I am utterly disturbing and I create only perplexity.” He understood his role as a provocateur, but he also had the best of intentions. He simply wanted to give people the opportunity to question themselves in order to become better humans.

Well, there are a lot of celebrities who push our buttons, but we don’t tend to think of them as philosophers!

What if we did? What if we could separate the thoughts from the thinkers? We tend to dismiss the whole package–the persona–instead of taking a good look at revolutionary or inflammatory ideas. We marginalize our radical thinkers.

The rapper Eminem is a radical thinker, though many would say he is just plain radical. In his way, he is true to himself. He has broken through to mainstream consciousness because he touched a nerve–and got a lot of press.

Would Socrates be a rapper today? Would he be a professor? A performance artist? How would we regard him?

He was notoriously unattractive. Would photographers surround him, taking photos to sell to the tabloids? Would we care about him if he didn’t make it on the cover of our favorite magazines?

At first glance, it may seem that we are sorely lacking in philosophers today. Perhaps we have an outdated idea of what a philosopher looks like. Not all philosophers have beards!

Do you think of Eminem as a philosopher?

Do you think of Julia Butterfly Hill, the environmental activist who lived at the top of a massive tree for two years, as

a philosopher?

Do you think of Rush Limbaugh as a philosopher?

Well, they do think. They do question. They provoke discussion and argument, and they are passionate about their ideas. That makes them a lot like Socrates.

Who inspires you today? Which thinkers make you think?

What is it about them that appeals to you? Is it their ideas or the way they are presented?

We’ve become quite savvy about packaging. We expect professional presentation. We discount the ideas of those who don’t look the part of a thinker. Of course, there are exceptions. Albert Einstein could pull off that wild-haired look. Bill Gates isn’t known for his sartorial splendor. Some might argue that Stephen Hawking is actually more compelling and impressive because of his physical challenges.

Whether we admit it or not, we each have our own biases about the appearance, age, sex, nationality, or religion of the thinkers of today. What are yours?

I’m afraid Socrates would need a good public relations team in order to be heard amidst the cacophony of thought-mongers today. The prescribed process for publicizing your ideas now goes something like this: write a book, get a publisher, do tons of interviews and book signings and readings, and cash in. It helps immensely if you appeal to the mainstream culture, or if your book manages to stir up a bit of controversy. Creating buzz is what gets thinkers noticed today.

Socrates was good at creating buzz, but he would face a lot of competition in the 21st century thinkers market. I like to think that he would find a way to be who he was and that we would appreciate his gifts.

Think about what you read, what you listen to, and what you consider worthy of your attention. As you do so, remember Socrates.

There are loads of passionate thinkers in our world today. Look for the ones who aren’t shouting from the rooftops, and consider those who turn you off completely. Expand your view of what a philosopher is. In the process, you’ll become a better one yourself.

Time Well Spent

It is common knowledge that creating and living according to a financial budget is a requisite for fiscal health and well-being. Budgets enable allocation of resources according to priorities. $x for shelter, $x for food, $x for clothing, $x for education, $x for savings, $x for transportation, $x for entertainment, etc.

What is not commonly applied, despite the preponderance of daily planners and time management software, is a temporal budget. Time is our most precious asset. It is also our only non-renewable asset. Each heartbeat, each second ticking on the clock denotes one moment less of our diminishing asset of time.

Each day presents us with 24 hours = 1,440 minutes = 81,400 seconds.

How are you spending these ever diminishing seconds? How have you budgeted your time? To what purpose do you pass the time of your life away?

I presume, since you have enough interest in your own well-being to subscribe to this eZine, that you have an interest in personal fulfillment.

There are aspects to your being; each aspect having its own needs. In order to be fulfilled and happy, these needs will need to be met. Time must therefore be allocated or budgeted to fulfill those needs if you wish to achieve any measure of fulfillment.

For the sake of simplicity, I will identify the main aspects of self as physical, emotional, mental and spiritual.

How much time in each do you have budgeted to meet your physical needs, your emotional needs, your mental needs and your spiritual needs?

Of course, just as there is no clear delineation between these various aspects of self,

there is also the possibility of getting several needs met from the same activity; say for example…sex.

So, now that I have your attention, please seriously consider taking the time to manage your time. Examine your spending habits and create a time budget to help you manage your most valuable asset.

What amount of time do you have allocated for the fulfillment of your various needs? Do you have time set aside to exercise? Time budgeted for ongoing education? Time allocated for honoring the sacred?

Does it really make sense to squander all those hours in front of the idiot box? Are those daily commutes underutilized times? Could you be learning something from tape or CD to increase your IQ instead of “dumbing down” to withstand the boredom of another lap in the rat race by listening to talk radio?

1,440. Divvie it up. Prioritize it. Spend it well. Invest it in your own enhancement.

Every moment lost or wasted is gone forever. Each moment spent without purpose or intent is like money tossed in the fire.

Leadership: Seed or Fruit?

Purpose: Learn immediately if you are fostering leadership or ignoring it. Discover the power of nurturing your people.

It was an enormous redwood tree. And due to regulations the forest service had to go to incredible trouble and expense in order to cut it down. The cutting team had to start by climbing to the branches and removing them one at a time from the lowest to the highest. Once at the top they could cut two foot lengths off of the trunk at a time until they reached the ground. It seems absurd to us that they started with the branches and then disassembled the trunk, a process that took hundreds of thousands of motions instead of just cutting at the base of the trunk, which of course, would have affected the entire tree. Recognizing that the efficiencies of working with the trunk in order to influence the rest of the tree holds true when we wish it to live and thrive, we have the choice to take a different approach – yet, many are attempting to grow branches before the trunk.

Leadership is the trunk. Strategic initiatives are the branches. Benefits are the fruit. This is not philosophy; it is a simple statement of the truth.

- Trunk = Leadership

- Branches = Lean Systems, Sustainability, Decentralization, Agility, Customer care, More.

- Fruit = Profit, Market share, Efficiencies, Quality, Environment, Innovation, Compliance, Low turnover, Prestige, Influence, More.

Are you starting at the right place?

There is no other place to start. An idea in action means people in action. The very second someone exposes their desire for the accomplishment of an objective; the idea is in motion through people. The exposure of the idea is leadership in itself, then the actions of people, whether guided by proper principles or not, is leadership.

There is a misconception that leadership is always positive. It is not. Leadership is setting the example. That example can be good or bad. Either way, that example will be followed. In their book, Built to Last, Jim Colllins and Jerry Porras say, “Top management will have an impact on an organization – in most cases, a significant impact. The question is, will it have the right kind of impact?” A manager sitting in his office all day, not interacting, not supervising, not inspecting, not involved, is setting the example for others. And yet, even if there is a low level use of positive leadership principles, there will still be a certain amount of good fruit.

These results, though limited, will usually follow from the power and validity of the idea, the existing infrastructure and manpower, and the mandate from the boss. The compulsory need to interact with others to accomplish a goal for mutual benefit means that a certain level of leadership capability exists and is needed in every person. The trunk of your business is leadership. Your company’s leadership, with its latent capacity, will piggyback the initiative and produce fruit.

In normal conditions of competition and growth, this present level of leadership is sufficient to produce enough fruit to keep everyone happy and focused on marginal periodic improvements. Due to the fact that the ability to produce quantum leaps in leadership capabilities has escaped corporate America, the incremental improvements created through books, seminars and tapes have sufficed.

Ignore leadership development at your own peril – Apply common sense

We have settled for the less involved leadership development approach and the nebulous results because we feel the need to do something without expending the resources that would then demand a measurement of ROI. In a Society for Organizational Learning supported survey, it was identified that one of the current challenges to leadership is that the “pressure is on for leaders to deliver and sustain measurable results and deliver results through others. (however) Focus of results is ROI, yet there is no measurement of ROI for leadership.” Though there is ample evidence to support the positive affects of properly principled leadership, many organizations are unmoved unless they have internal numbers to justify the expense. The cost of getting the numbers, however, is a barrier in itself and leads to an abandonment of a serious program and reliance on the marginal results of “what everyone is doing.”

Are you fixated on line items and task lists?

Our concentration, therefore, moves to the power of the ideal. Sustainability and Lean Manufacturing are the way to go, or it is our ability to be responsive to the market that is important, or by decentralizing we will produce the fruit we want. No matter the complexity of the strategic initiative it lends itself to a task list and line items. We can assign a person; put it in a pert chart and schedule meetings six months in advance. This black and white constitutes our corporate comfort zone.

We are darn good at it,

and it predictably produces results – though marginal. We are spending time on the branches, squatting at the end waiting to see the fruit. We are lavishing attention on the branches, pruning, watering and talking to them. If a leaf sprouts, we know it. If a leaf falls, we know it. We mark it in black or red and continue to stroke the bark and fluff the leaves. All the while, the trunk is left to nature for its water, sun and soil.

The growth of the trunk is out of our comfort zone. Dean Hohl, the President of Leading Concepts Inc. explains that, “The objectives associated with leadership, teamwork, and communication, don’t lend themselves to task lists and line items.” They are nearly impossible to quantify and track. It is easy to rest on our experience that the trunk was here when we arrived and it will be here when we leave. We’ve build hundreds of branches, but never a trunk. We then rely on the latent soft-skills of our people to implement the ideals.

Today we find ourselves in an unanticipated predicament, which is pressing us from several different directions and threatening our viability. Foreign competition, new technologies, and ideals that require a shift in corporate culture all seem hard to keep up with and out of our control.

Acknowledging that we can have minimal impact on our competitors, especially those overseas, and that new technologies are something that are requisite for all to grasp, our greatest opportunity for advantage comes from a superior ability to implement the reigning corporate ideals. Many strategic initiatives, particularly sustainability and lean manufacturing, have drawn us in with promises of incredible fruit and their adaptability to black and white. However much these initiatives look like branches, they are actually part of the trunk.

These initiatives necessitate a sea change in corporate culture. Successful implementation requires the buy-in of nearly everyone in the company, which demands a purposeful approach to changing people’s values; a soft subject. The objective of changing people’s behaviors forces us to enter an arena parallel to that of soft-skill development. Our situation demands that we get out of our comfort zone and figure out how to effectively nurture the trunk.

In order to best control the situation our focus must go back to influencing people’s values. Along with helping people understand and value the power of the continuous improvement of lean thinking or the financial impact of sustainability, we have the complimentary opportunity to develop the soft-skills of teamwork, leadership and communication. If we are going to legitimately jump into this arena and do it correctly, not only is leadership complimentary, it is an imperative.

Leadership is the trunk. Implementation of these strategic initiatives cannot be successful with the existing level of leadership. We’ve reached a point of necessity, which compels us to develop the ability to achieve quantum advances in leadership capability. As necessity is the mother of invention, and invention at this level will be dramatically different, prepare for a method that is as different from standard “leadership and teamwork” development as the telephone is from the telegraph.

Jamie Flinchbaugh, an expert in lean manufacturing transformation, questioned, “How is it that such a low percentage of companies that know about lean can turn it into a success?” His answer was, “because the leadership, cultural, organization and implementation challenges are bigger than most people anticipate.” I will reinforce his message by saying that in order to achieve ideal results you have to put ideal resources towards their accomplishment. Don’t try to put out a house fire with a garden hose.

We no longer have the latitude to rely on an as-is trunk of leadership. We cannot expect that branches of revolutionary strategies can be managed and implemented with existing leadership capabilities. Decorating the leaves will not pass for results. We have to purposefully move the values of people, help them change their behaviors, and work together with them to grow the desired fruit.

By altering our concentration from the branches to the trunk, we are enhancing every ability of our organization. A healthier trunk, means the capacity for, and increased health of, our branches, which in turn produces a greater quantity and quality of fruit.

Now that we are focused on the trunk, we can begin to look at the opportunity of taking quantum leaps forward in the soft-skills of our people. The solution lays in immersion leadership training.

Wheres The Joy?

There is so much to get done these days. Sometimes it seems like there aren’t enough hours in the day to get it all accomplished! But, you know what? We don’t have any more or less time during our days than our ancestors did. The difference is that they seemed to have a different spirit and attitude towards life.We want to be organized. We want to get our lists and projects done, but at what cost?

I know that sometimes I have been so focused on a project I am doing that I have been sharp with my kids. I’m not proud of that. I would get my agenda done and accomplished but I wouldn’t relax. I became stressed and more easily irritated. In the meantime life was flying by and I was missing out on enjoying the everyday little things.

I am working on setting aside my agenda every now and again to sit down and look at my family. Really see them, be with them; body, mind and soul and enjoy their company. How I relish doing that! I am also learning on enjoying my work time as well as my playtime.

We need to learn to be more joyful in all parts of our life not just certain

breaks or intervals of it. If you can take pleasure in a chore, time seems to go by more swiftly and you feel more relaxed and less rushed in life. Take pride and pleasure not just in your hobbies and interests but also in your household work. You can feel pleasure in planting flowers, cooking an aroma-filled dinner or making a bed that you know brings you rest. Be interested in all you do. You will see how you can carry a joyful heart with you as you work as well as when you play.

We don’t need more hours or days in which to enjoy ourselves. Laura Ingalls Wilder said, “If we expect to enjoy our life, we will have to learn to be joyful in all of it, not just at stated intervals when we can get time or when we have nothing else to do.”

I’m working on doing just that and hoping it rubs off on my family as well. It will take time and effort but I’m determined to learn and feel joy permeate my life.I hope that you may also rediscover that joy.

Top Five Journal Exercises

Keeping a journal is a form of creative expression that enhances the creativity coaching process. Keeping a journal develops emotional awareness, reinforces self-esteem and aids in problem-solving. Keeping a journal also provides a written record of artistic growth, struggle and change. Here are some basic exercises that I use throughout the creativity coaching process.

DIALOGUE: Writing a dialogue between one or more subjects helps to identify and separate emotions, ideas, issues and influences in a given creative situation. The primary result of writing dialogue is to clarify the creative situation, to give voice to all aspects of the situation and to restore the situation to it’s proper perspective.

GRATITUDE LIST: Thank you lists are very easy to write. It takes no more than a few seconds, some paper and a pen to create a list. Thank you lists, no matter what the length, powerfully challenge negative thoughts, disappointment and disouragement. Lists also help restore the situaition to it’s rightful place in the clients creative pocess. Thank you lists are especially useful when pursuing long-term goals and facing crises.

COMPLETED ACTION LIST: What a client thinks can powerfully impact the creative process. Building an artistic

career upon past negative artistic experiences blocks creative expression. It also leaves no room for the possiblitiy of current or future positive change. Keeping track of completed actions, no matter how small, provides an accurate record of the client’s progress toward her artistic and business goals.

GOAL LIST: Identifying and developing artistic and business goals, provides a clear path for fullfilling the client’s dreams. Regular progress through each goal can become a ready source of motivation for the client. The goal list provides a reality check for boh the client and the coach, when difficulties rise or progress is being assessed.

CHARACTER TRAITS LIST: Developing and maintaining a list of the character traits reinforces self-esteem, aids in problem-solving, and increases emotional awareness. The client describes one success using one character trait. The client learns to acknowledge her participation in the creative process which will encrourage future creative learning and growth.

Keeping a journal of creative work and progress can enrich all areas of an artist’s life. Start exploring your creativity today.

Time Management Mastery

From Potential to Performance

One of the great things about life is that we can realistically be or do anything we choose to. This includes being a good time manager! We must believe that we can be a good time manager – that we have the potential. Unfortunately, many people say, “Well, I am just a poor time manager,” as if it was ingrained in their DNA. The truth is that anyone can be a great time manager, if they choose to go from potential to performance.

So, how do we do this? Here is a simple 7 part process:

1. Believe that you can become a good time manager

2. Inventory where your time is currently being spent

3. Determine what your life values are – what do you view as important, what do you want to accomplish?

4. Set time priorities that will move you toward living out

your values

5. Develop a system of scheduling that works best for you, not a time management conglomerate

6. Learn to say “no” to things that are not part of your priorities moving you toward your values – exercise your power to choose

7. Do what is in your new schedule

These simple steps, if you apply them, will take you from having the potential to be a good time manager to true time management mastery and performance!

Creativity – Untie Yourself From All Those Strings

Remember when you were young – and I mean really young – back to those days you can’t even remember well. You were sitting on the floor. You are building that special tower. Concentrating on that final piece. At that moment you hear the scratching steps of the dog approaching.

Sometimes it is difficult to let go of what you have constructed in the past. You’re the father of a new idea and this idea has been accepted. The idea has been sculptured in the organization, people are using it and after years you nearly forgot it was yours. It was rather good. Yet, that was the past.Today you are joining the team again and it is someone else who gets the credits for a new concept. Everybody agreed and people are leaving the room, “it time to build something new.” Unfortunately it’s your toy that bears the consequences. It is of no longer use. They call it the legacy issue. It has been working fine for years but

now it is over.

In order to construct something new you might need to destruct something old. Although not always. But if it is the case, let go of that previous idea. Cut the emotional strings and let it free. That’s when the baby is born: no more strings attached. If you are digging for gold and that single hole doesn’t seem to bring you any; jump out and start digging at some other place. Do it when others can still see you. They can put out their hand to you.

The dog is entering the room, glad to see you. Wagging with his tail. It is time to play. How will you react when the pieces end up scattered around the corners of the room?

Pretending Your Life As You Want It – True Power Series

This is the sixth article in our “True Power” series. If you haven’t been following the series, visit The ARTrepreneur to read the foundational material on beliefs before continuing.

All people live a structured existence that is entirely make-believe. For example, though we act as if it’s true, there is no such thing as days of the week or hours in a day. These things are completely fabricated conventions. If an alien were to visit New York, and someone said, “Well it’s Monday morning, everyone’s off to work,” the alien would nod politely and think, “How quaint. They regulate their lives into compartments.” The alien would in no way mistake the custom for reality. He would recognize the custom as an idea. We pretend it’s real, but we could pretend other customs just as easily.

There is no such thing as time really – no minutes, hours, days, weeks, or months. We pretend they exist, and structure our lives accordingly, but we could just as easily do it a different way. The day could be split in half and called “up” and “down.” Someone named some cycles. There are other cycles and other names. Musicians, for example, often operate in a no-time zone. Lots of writers have inverted or highly individualistic work schedules. Many artists have made successful careers by following their own personal rhythms and beliefs. They never fell for, “That’s the way it is,” because they knew it was all pretend, and they could pretend their own structure just as easily as following someone else’s.

If someone says to you, “the music business is brutal,” refuse to believe it. If they want to pretend it’s brutal, then they’ll get that result. You won’t be so easily deceived. There are actors who have made careers quickly in Hollywood because they didn’t realize it was supposed to be hard. They weren’t aware of the convention. Realize that all conventions that we call modern society are just ideas. Ideas are mobile. You can use them, discard them, and invent new ideas. In reality, there is no movie industry or art industry. In reality, there are never “Seven Steps to Anything.” There are only ideas, and

your ideas are as valid as anyone’s, and certainly more valid for you.

Pretending Your Life As You Want It Exercise

There are two ways to do this exercise. Choose a time everyday, and pretend your life just the way you want it. See yourself in your mind doing the things you want to do the way you want to do them. This is much like the internal visualization exercises. You try to trick your mind into believing you’re experiencing the ideal now.

If you are bolder, you can pick a day or even a longer period of time, and while you go about your day-to-day life, pretend that what you really want is happening. Have imaginary meetings, imaginary bank deposits, imaginary shows, imaginary dinners out. Physically, you may be doing the dishes, but mentally you’re making your subconscious become accustomed to the ideal. The minute you do this, it starts to create the circumstances to make it happen. The less you negate the ideal, the less you say to yourself, “That’s not realistic. I can’t have it,” the easier and faster it will be produced. By thinking freely about the ideal, you begin to whittle away at doubts. At some point you’ll accept the ideal, and the pretend world and the actual world will begin to mesh.

Every successful person ignored the pretend circumstances outside themselves, and pretended, instead, to be who they wanted to be and live how they wanted to live. Pretending, then, is the essence of experience and, therefore, an essential quality. Your life is a masterpiece composed of ideas that motivate you to act. Be the creator of those ideas. Be moved by your own impulses and desires. Pretend your existence into what you want it to be. That’s all anyone’s doing anyways.
