If you answered mostly a) and b) to questions 1-4, you’re stuck. Your job has forced you to forget about essential pieces of yourself – it’s time to get some career coaching now.

If you answered mostly a) and b) to questions 5 & 6, you’re a borderline case. You haven’t yet decided whether your dream is all that important to the quality of your life. Just an experiment, you might want to sit with a blank piece of paper and really brainstorm what it would be like to live your dream.

If you answered mostly a) and b) to questions 7-11… what are you waiting for? You’ve got a plan, you’ve set up the necessary support and you’re good to go; you should be able to weather the inevitable ups and downs. Be sure to allow your company enough notice to make the transition smoothly, so you can leave with glowing reviews. Congratulations!

Whistle While You Work

Are you stuck in a job you hate? Do you dread getting up five days a week and live only for the weekend? If so, consider the wise words of Goethe, an eighteenth century German poet/philosopher, “It is not doing the things we like but liking the things we do that makes life blessed.” This is good advice and certainly the best place to start.

There’s no way you’ll find the perfect job by complaining about the one you have. Complaining only brings you more of what you’ve already got to complain about. That’s the way things work. The secret to career success is to look for and find satisfaction in your present situation. Once you do, a whole new world of possibility can open up for you. Maybe even your dream job.

Satisfaction brings more satisfaction. Finding ways to love and enjoy your work gets you to lighten up. You become more agreeable and cooperative, more awake and alert, more focused and productive. Looking for reasons to feel

good about your work is a creative act in itself. It generates more creativity and allows more good things to come into your life.

Who knows what can happen then? Maybe you’ll actually get to like your job? Maybe you’ll get the promotion and raise you want and now deserve? Maybe someone else will offer you a better position? Or maybe you’ll discover the self discipline and self esteem to create a successful business of your own? Anything is possible when you feel positive about what you’re doing!

So get in step with the “Seven Dwarfs” and “Put on that grin and start right in and whistle while you work.” Obviously, Snow White’s little friends were marching to the right tune. After all, they ended up with their own diamond mine!

Professional Organizations: Join or Fold?

All of us join professional organizations for a reason–a friend belongs, we need to for credibility, etc. Many times we let years slide by and we don’t stop and review those reasons. Unless something sets off a boundary–lack of funds, the organization runs itself into a ditch, or a leadership problem.

When doesn’t it fit any longer? Is there a pattern to you dropping a membership?

I know, as an accountant for 15 years, I joined organization after organization. Without knowing it, and after delegating it to my assistant, I realized that I belonged to 32 organizations. Yes, at one time. Yes, I know this is probably exceptional. Yes, I can blame it on my assistant or being too busy. But I’m not. It wasn’t until I began to take a complete review of those memberships that I realize many no longer fit.

During the review process, I learned to ask different questions. Let me share with you a 6-step process that I’ve used for the last 8 years that I know will help you: 1) choose more wisely in the future; (2) set your intention and expectations first; and (3) know what you want to give back.

This 10-minute exercise will save you time and money as well as make money and create time with smarter choices in the future.

1. Make a list of current memberships of all your professional organizations. Yes, go ahead abbreviations.

2. Ask what was your intention for joining this organization at that time?

3. Does that intention still fit? If yes, rating from 1-10, what would your rating be when you joined and what would be the rating now? 1=because I was new to the profession. 10=I’m getting more out of my membership than I ever intended. If that intention doesn’t fit, would you like to change it or fold (dissolve your membership). If the 1-10 rating does fit for you, create one that does.

4. What is my expectations for my membership? What do I expect to get

out of belonging in 2004? If your beginning rating was low and it’s still low, do you have any expectations for that changing in the future and what do you need to do in order to get to that level? Are my expectations realistic? When do I want to have the first three steps of those expectations, if any, completed.

The most valuable question part of #4–What set of circumstances or date will the membership end? Remember, everything is temporary.

5. Prioritize each membership. Which one do you value most? Least? What do you value most? What does that one have that the others don’t? Is it something that you have the power to change? What needs to change to make them all valuable to their fullest? Is it even possible? Realistic?

6. Sixth, how can your membership in each organization help you with your goals in the future? Match your goals with the organization’s value. What value does it add to your life, family, or business?

Honesty now. Okay, it may take some of you with a longer list more than the 10-minutes I promised. You have to agree though, just reading these steps will get you to think a little differently before joining or renewing your memberships–in any organization.

From a coaching standpoint, and a FYI, having expectations is a good thing!

This is a great exercise to complete at least once a year. If you take a few extra minutes right now, now that you are focused on this topic, and write the expiration date next to the organization. And add those dates into your task alert system to review these questions again before you renew.

You can also create a file folder called, “Professional Membership Evaluations & Renewals.” Inside the front cover, you can write in BIG bold letters, “What’s in it for me to belong?”

Celebrate Birthdays!

I am a firm believer in birthdays. My birthday is my day and thus, I make it a personal holiday each and every year. The date of our birth is not like every other day in our life. It is our own special, unique day. A birthday is a day that we can really kick up our heels and celebrate our Authentic Self. And, as we know when we allow our Authentic Self to shine, we build self-esteem and that confident attitude that we so desire starts to immerge.

Following are five rules to make a birthday super special-

1. Take the day off from work. It’s a rule that I have and follow, with much annual glee. I have rarely worked or been in school on my birthday. It feels great to wake up and not have to go to an office or classroom. Whether or not you build a vacation around your birthday or simply take a personal day, permit yourself to steer clear of work for the duration of your special day. You will return to work feeling satisfied and successful because you allowed your birthday to be dedicated to your Authentic Self.

2. Plan 24 hours of delight. Create a day that will be memorable and fun for you. This will likely involve you thinking of your birthday a few days (or weeks) in advance. You might need to do some dreaming around the decadent question ‘What do I most want to do on my birthday?’, if the ideal birthday agenda doesn’t pop into your head. Do you find yourself murmuring that you don’t spend as much time as you would like with those you love, as I sometimes do? If you are guilty of making that comment, your birthday is a chance to make up for lost time and really enjoy your friends and family. Plus—it’s your special day so they will likely do whatever you want to do! Whatever you do, plan it out so you can jump into your day with passion.

3. Ask for what you want. If you want to spend the evening on a moonlit beach with your honey, make sure that you and s/he are on the same page and really take steps to make it happen. If you want them to book the B&B, ask them

to. If you also want breakfast in bed, ask for it! Do yourself and everyone else in your life a favor and ask for what you want or need, especially on a day like your birthday. Set yourself up for sweet success on this special day and make a request for what you want.

4. Don’t limit yourself. Think big! Remember, you are the hero of your life and as such, have the primary role to play in its design and execution. Don’t allow your Authentic Self to play small on this day of all days. Want to skydive, join the circus or watch The Oprah Winfrey Show live? You can make those things happen. Dream, do some research and plan a little. The pre-work will give you something to look forward to, keep you on task and remind you of the importance of putting yourself first.

5. Shower yourself with treasures. Sleep late or wake early. Indulge in good food. Splurge on dewy, fresh flowers. Enjoy an aromatic massage. Order a decadent dessert. Travel to see friends that you haven’t seen in a while. Wear clothes that make you feel sexy. Go shopping or get a pedicure. Book yourself for 3 days (or 7?) of R&R at Kripalu in Lenox, MA where you can enjoy Ayurvedic bodywork, yoga classes, and delicious vegetarian meals. All treasures great and small feed our Authentic Self.

So, what’s not to lose? Star your special day on your calendar or planner and start dreaming. Begin the celebration of your Authentic Self on your birthday. Allow others to be in on your special day as a way of valuing their relationship with you. Remember, if you don’t put yourself and your own wants and needs first, who will?

The Secret of Self Care

Wherever you go, there you are. There’s no escaping it – your world is a reflection of you and if the view in your mirror doesn’t elicit a certain spark perhaps it’s time to question the underlying assumptions.

As someone who has worked intensely with the body – as a personal trainer and holistic health counselor – it always surprises me when clients don’t do the things that clearly would bring them to a healthier state. When I look a little closer I see that they’re still out there looking for what is only found ‘in here’. Your pursuit of fulfillment can certainly lead you to a never ending spiral of wanting and a maze of improbable options. However, unless you nourish the source of your renewal – your own being – you will always look for the next diet, gadget, guru or solution.

The answer to your seeking doesn’t lie out there somewhere. It resides within you. The quality of your answers is dictated by the intention of your questions. Why is self care on the bottom of the totem pole? Why is making money more important than making LIFE? Finding the expression of what lights your fire in all you do is what gives your world its meaning. Primary food – what feeds your soul, your essence – is your raison d’être.

“We are all functioning at a small fraction of our capacity to live life fully in its total meaning of loving, caring, creating, and adventuring. Consequently, the actualizing of our potential can become the most exciting adventure of our lifetime.” Herbert A. Otto

The best kept secret – and we all know it – is that self care is all about self love. If you still believe that something out there – making $1,000,000 a year, finding the partner, etc. – will bring you happiness you’re in for a rude awakening. There will never be enough ‘out there’ that will make you feel like enough ‘in here’. That’s not the way it works. Self nourishment is what brings outer nourishment. If it’s been a while since you’ve felt this level of vibrancy and vitality in your daily life, it’s helpful to look at the signposts that may indicate you’re off track. What are some of those indicators?

•Life feels flat or dull and you’re not fully engaged with work or play

•You feel chronic stress and compartmentalize things in order to manage

•Your relationships lack depth, work is boring,

your body is out of touch

•You’re not expressing your passion

•You’re mostly in a state of doing vs being

•You’re very busy but you don’t have a sense of meaningful accomplishment

Does this sound like your world? Who are you right now? Does your work excite you? Do your relationships nurture you? Does your body please you?

Remember a time when you were fully engaged and passionate about your life. Who were you being? Being Fully Alive is about savoring the juicy-ness of your here and now. Life is not a spectator sport. Many of us make choices everyday that deaden our experience of life, when we could be making choices that make us come alive! What’s the solution?

Choice is the engine of your evolution. Gary Zukav

Consider that when you’re Fully Alive you’re energized, aware, and doing what you love. You are fully present, creating your life with joy and excitement, while you navigate the dynamic content of your world. You surf the wave of change, tune in, assess and take your next step. You are here now, fully engaged.

How can being Fully Alive help you recover your essential self? It will provide you with tools and support on a weekly basis to:

•embrace your intuitive nature and enhance your mind/body connection

•identify your limiting beliefs and where you’re holding out

•discover your energy drains and realign with your intentions

•design a self care program that fits your unique needs

•develop a spiritual practice that sustains you

•identify exercise and movement that feeds your body playfully

•enhance the quality of energy for work and play with ease and joy

•tap your passion and assist you in incorporating it into your daily life

Being Fully Alive is about YOU – who you are, how to nurture yourself, how to connect to your core, how to show up as YOU in your world.

The Last 3 Secrets to Boosting Your Creativity

Last month I gave you the next three secrets to how I boosted my own creativity. So far, we have discussed habit, attitudes and unlearning old lessons. Now I will reveal another three secrets that will bring your creativity up another notch. Are you ready?

1. Make it a group activity

You’ve heard the saying “two heads are better than one”, and I say, “the more the merrier!” Get together with others to brainstorm and kick around ideas. If there is someone you know whom you think is very creative, make sure you invite that person into your group. Pay attention to how he thinks and see what you can learn from each other. Group brainstorming sessions are not only highly productive, they are educational, and fun!

Don’t think that you can only include people who are familiar with the subject matter into the group. Sometimes having someone with a completely different perspective is exactly what you need to steer you from the linear thinking you may be stuck in.

2. Remember that it’s okay to think small

Many small ideas resulted in incredible results. Here’s an example to illustrate my point. I know I am dating myself, but how many people remember key-punch cards for computers? Back in the stone age of computers, in order to do programming, people had to write down the instructions in whatever programming language. Then they had to insert these cards into a key punch machine and punch in the instructions. If you had a large program, you would end up with a stack of cards. These are then fed into the computer for it to run the program. (I apologize if this explanation is not exactly accurate. But this technology is now pretty much obsolete.) If you have ever seen one of the key-punch cards, you might have noticed that there is a little notch cut off at the upper left hand corner of the card. Do you know why that is?

The story is that in the key-punch hay-days, a lot of cards were getting jammed in the machines because the corners would get bent while being fed into the machine. I have no idea how long this went on until one day, a creative engineer at IBM suggested that they just cut a little triangle off the corner. Lo and behold, they tried the suggestion and it worked like a charm! Rumor has it that

individual was very generously rewarded for his stroke of creativity.

Let this story be the inspiration for your approach to creative solutions to anything. Your idea does not have to be huge and earth shattering to have a profound effect. Take the pressure off yourself and think small. Just think outside the box. Everyone expected key-punch cards to be perfectly rectangular, but who’s to say they HAVE to be that way!

3. Believe in your own creativity

Ever heard of the self-fulfilling prophecy? It works in this situation too. If you think and believe that you don’t have a creative bone in your body, guess what? You WON’T have a creative bone in your body. However, many of the experts in this field firmly believe that we ALL have creative abilities. We just have to learn how to access them. So, this is the most important secret I am sharing with you. Start believing that you can learn how to access your creative talents and you will improve in this area as long as you work on it.

I am all the proof you need. I thought I only had half a brain – the left side. But I wanted to develop my creative skills. And I believed that it could be learned. With some hard work and tenacity, now I’ve moved my creativity scale. I am still a long ways off from challenging Tolkein (who in my opinion is one of the most imaginative people who ever lived). But I am more confident of my ability to stir up my creative juices when needed. And I find that I enjoy my creative activities more and more. You too can make improvements in this area. Just follow my example.

In summary, creativity is a skill that can be developed and honed just like cooking, typing, and public speaking. You just need to know how to adjust so you can improve. I have shared the most effective lessons I’ve learned about becoming more creative. Now go out there and practice.

My Fear of Heights and a Hot Air Balloon

Hot air ballooning is a different kettle of fish. Now I know hot air balloons fly (sort of) however there are no in-flight rations, flight attendants, movies, headsets, or pressurized cabins. There is just a big balloon (also called an envelope – I paid attention during the pre-flight briefing), a basket, a gas burner and a group of excited people. To me this was not flying, more like drifting and floating randomly above the earth.

What possessed me to voluntarily take a hot air balloon flight I’ll never know.

A flight was booked and as luck would have it, perfect weather conditions. We arrived at the departure point on a cool, crisp morning before the sun rose. The other passengers had already arrived and were eagerly awaiting the pre-flight briefing before take-off.

That was the good bit.

Fear washed through me, it became difficult to breathe, and my heart was pounding rapidly. It took supreme effort to keep my panic in check and instead, not wishing to put a damper on anyone’s enthusiasm, tried to appear as nonchalant as possible.

As time for take-off approached my fear intensified. Finally, as the ropes were released from the basket and the balloon slowly made its way upward, my knees turned to jelly and the urge to rid myself of the previous night’s dinner became overwhelming.

Totally trapped I silently screamed as we rose higher and higher from the ground.

What did I do next to overcome this panic?

I changed my state.

I remembered to breathe, and with that was able to centre myself (knowledge of meditation helps!) to step fully into the present moment. It also helped to shift my focus and become more curious, about the purple hills I could see on the horizon.

My focus then shifted to experiencing how serene it was up in the sky, only occasionally hearing the sound of the burner as it blasted hot air into the balloon above.

From experiencing this serenity my focus turned to the burner and feeling the heat of the flames.

Happy with experiencing what I was, I began asking myself probing questions about my fear. With each

answer I would then ask “and what is important about that?”

Remaining centred and controlling my breathing, I continued to answer each question fully to myself until there was nothing left to ask.

From answering my own questions I discovered my fear was based on the fact that there was no jet engine, steering wheel, seat belts, escape chute and we were in a basket attached to a really big balloon!

From those answers I then:

*Determined that the likelihood of disaster was minimal to nil.

*Knew the present moment was the safest place for me.

*Future paced me. I imagined myself eating my champagne breakfast with the other passengers after the balloon flight, and retelling my story.

*Realised I was actually having an experience of a lifetime which I probably will never do again and decided to make the most of it.

Not only that, the captain seemed to know what he was doing (always encouraging), I knew the equipment was in great shape (I had a good look), and there was someone following the balloon in a vehicle below.

Taking several deep breaths, I refocused on my internal world and connected with peace again, silently giving thanks to my years of meditation practise.

At last I was able to truly enjoy this exhilarating experience! The peace and tranquillity above the earth with the sun rising in the East, and the green rolling hills below was absolutely awesome – I was in heaven!

Being in the present moment, focusing on controlled breathing, as well as becoming centred helped enormously in dealing with my anxiety. Not only that by asking the question “and what is important about that?” got to the heart of my fear.

Try asking yourself that question sometime when a need crops up. You might be surprised as what you discover about yourself.

How to Give Dynamic Stress Management Presentations – Part 1

Depending on your line of work, you may be called upon to give a stress management presentation or organize a workshop. Usually, the person who gives a stress management workshop is a public speaker, physician, counselor, or Yoga teacher.

Who should be the speaker in a stress management seminar or workshop? You are looking for someone who is outgoing, knowledgeable, full of positive energy, works well with the public, and can communicate clearly. This same person should be able to give solutions to stress reduction “off the top of his or her head.”

Depending upon your familiarity with stress management, time for preparation, and how comfortable you are with giving a presentation, you may be the best qualified person for the task. Public speaking challenges are many, but all are manageable. Each component of a presentation can be prepared and refined, until you have a “masterpiece.” When you have given a few stress management presentations, you can refine any components that are “weak.” You will know what parts of a presentation are weak by the reactions of your audience.

Research and identify with the line of work. As an example: Health care workers, customer service, and manufacturers, each experience stress, but their jobs create unique stress situations. With this in mind, make yourself familiar with the every day stress situations that go with the particular jobs in your audience.

Preparation and research are part of every presentation, but after your first presentation on stress management, you will have a template to build on, improve, and constantly revise. You

should speak in terms that will be familiar to your specific audience. For example: As collective groups, health care workers, teachers, and customer service representatives, have their own interests and jargon.

You will want to provoke interest, understanding, and participation. At the same time, you want your specific audience to respond favorably. You must also anticipate reaction to your presentation. Therefore, make sure that your points are reasonable and have credible resources; you will receive a favorable reaction from your target audience.

Your speaking voice can be worked for projection, clarity, and pitch. Many people are unhappy to hear the sound of their speaking voice played back through a recording device, but most of us can work our unique voice to get the most out of it. By using a mirror, audio recorder, digital recorder, or video recorder, you can get the most out of your voice.

Faithful Emotions

The original article contains an image of a sad clown. This can be found on my blog through my website.

The sad clown attracts us and evokes a feeling of sadness and compassion. Have you ever noticed that the sadness and compassion really feels like it is for you? Often we live our suppressed emotional experiences through some other external situation, mainly entertainment. Once we’re in a safe environment, it’s okay to let it out. Except, you’ve buried so many emotions, you’re not sure what is left unexpressed. It can derail you at any time, upsetting your equilibrium, setting the waterworks at the drop of a hat, and blazing the rage with a tiny spark.

Consider a new way of being in this world; a way that allows the expression and understanding of your emotions. Imagine being present for others who are enmeshed in difficult times, barely coping to keep their emotions in check. What healing can occur! What strength will be gained! What friendship and loyalty will be developed! What team support will be developed! What courage will be found!

  • If we’re human, then what does it mean to be human?
  • If we’re spirit, then what does it mean to be spirit?
  • If we’re emotions, then what does it mean to be feelings?
  • If we’re the mind, then

what does it mean to be thoughts?

  • If we’re soul, then what does it mean to be soulful?

I believe we are spiritual beings having a physical, human experience. Within in that context, we experience many things on many levels. Could it be that this is what it means to be a multi-dimensional being? I’m not interested in empirical evidence and succinct clarity; I’m interested in the experience of being and life. The complexity of existence and the human entity absolutely requires an element of faith and trust in an inner core that cannot be defined by science.

The Ten Commandments of Leadership

A poem hangs on the wall at Mother Theresa’s orphanage in India. For all who are called to lead, it is a great reminder of what we should do:

1. People are illogical, unreasonable and self-centered (including me). Love them anyway.

2. If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives. Do good anyway.

3. If you are successful, you win false friends and true enemies. Succeed anyway.

4. The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow. Do good anyway.

5. Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable. Be honest and frank anyway.

6. The biggest people with the biggest ideas can be shot down by the littlest people with the littlest ideas. Think big anyway.

7. People favor underdogs, but follow only top dogs. Fight

for a few underdogs anyway.

8. What you spend years building may be destroyed overnight. Build anyway.

9. People really need help, but may attack you if you do help them. Help them anyway.

10. Give the world the best you have and you will get kicked in the teeth. Give the best you have anyway.
